A45: space defined by a staircase

With 550 m² of floorspace, the penthouse is on two levels. On the bottom floor are the living and sleeping areas. spiraling staircase leads to the top floor, where there’s a winter garden, terrace, and swimming pool.

Made of white marble with a timber handrail, the staircase wraps its way around a curved wall finished in white slats. At the top is a band of white glass bricks that let soft light filter through to delicately illuminate the surfaces. The curving shape of the staircase breaks up the rigidity of the horizontal lines of the interior design, transforming itself into the visual fulcrum of the home.

Eclectic, sophisticated design

The mainly monochromatic interiors provide a neutral backdrop for the owner’s art collection.

In the living room, the natural oak floor creates a warm platform, further enhanced by a large beige rug. Sofas with light-tones sit harmoniously alongside leather armchairs, while a brass lamp rests on a timber surface that doubles as the base for a low sofa.

round marble-topped table with a metal base and upholstered chairs form the centerpiece of the dining area. A glossy red light fitting hangs over the table, complementing the vibrant colors of the artwork on the walls.

The brilliant red of a set of monkey sculptures by designer Arun Kumar accents the piano nook. Combined with a designer lamp, this artwork creates a visual contrast with the glossy black piano, making this a distinctive corner of the home.

Divided from the piano nook by a wall of clear fluted glass, the office is an eclectic space furnished with armchairs and sofas in shades of ochre and baby blue. A red rug, photographs, antiques, and dark timber furniture complete the space. A writing desk and chair inside a bay window take in views of the surrounding landscape.

Comprising Carrara, Swiss White, and Thassos marble in a checkerboard pattern, a stone-floored hallway leads to the bedroom area, which includes a master bedroom, two guest rooms, and staff quarters, each with its own balcony.

The master bedroom has herringbone parquet flooring, white walls, and a canopy bed in the center of the room. From here, a sliding glass door opens onto a banyan tree, creating a direct connection with nature.

Upstairs is a spacious terrace with an English-style winter garden, as well as a lounge area with herringbone flooring. This space is enhanced with rugs, furniture, and sofas that combine neutral tones with splashes of red to create a welcoming mood.

A building in a transparent box

An important aspect of the project is the way indoors and outdoors are connected. Wrapped in a kind of glass box that allows sunlight to filter through, the home is flooded with a soft light while offering 360-degree views of the surrounding vegetation. Balconies with potted plants further strengthen the connection with nature.

Designed to provide relief from Delhi’s hot summers, the project uses insulating glass, sustainable materials, and a corrugated metal roof with a skylight to optimize natural ventilation.
